• If you are asked by a client to copy someone's painting or photograph:  It is an insult to say to an artist “Hey, I like your work, but will you copy this other guy’s art for me?”  And it can also be illegal. Suggest a painting in your own style and of your own design.  Let them know that you don’t want to break any copyright laws.   
• Paintings made from Photographs:  Photographs are automatically copyrighted under stringent international copyright laws the minute the photographer presses the button. Unless the photographer has expressly given permission for its use, making a painting based on a photo infringes copyright laws, even if that photo is reprinted as a card, calendar, on Twitter, Pinterest or Wikipedia, in a magazine, etc.
